Resourcing First
You have a task that you need to tackle - right now - as you read this, something is looming. It might be huge or it might be minuscule. It might be tedious or it might be something painful and challenging - even life-altering. Nevertheless, if you are capable of reading this, you most certainly have something you need to get done. It is a condition and privilege of life.
Many people, if not all, have moments in which they may temporarily “put off” the task because they “don’t feel like it”. It is theoretically possible that there is someone on the planet who has not said something like that but I am certain I have never met this rare, and possibly non-existent, person. I am going to give you a magic formula for getting anything done. It sounds counter-intuitive, but the first step is to stop and then to ask yourself a very important question.
What do I need to feel in order to accomplish this task?
Most people ask, “What do I feel now?” or “How do I feel now?” before engaging a task. Emotions are the fuel to action - always. Scientists have identified over 34,000 emotions and the formula for all of them is already within you. You have never actually taken a single action without being fueled by at least one of these 34,000 emotions. Therefore, if the emotion you feel now does not serve the task you need to accomplish, you must do one of two things: change the task or change the emotion.
If you are not able to change the task, then change the emotion. The reality is this, it is much easier to change your emotion than it is to change the task. The mistake people make is they try to stop feeling the emotion that is preventing the task (fear, nervous, bored, etc) but seldom work to replace it. They have not identified the emotion or emotions they need to fuel themselves toward the task.
If you need to have a hard conversation with someone, what will you need to feel? Make sure you choose all of the emotions that you want to feel and that match the integrity of your character and identity (who you want to be). If you need to be brave, generate brave. How? Remember the last time you felt brave. Remember where you were and what you were doing. Recall the sights, sounds, and scents of the experience. Close your eyes if you need to and recall this emotional memory so vividly that you feel it - I mean actually feel it. Do this repeatedly. If you have a deadline for your task today, go ahead and use this method. The best way to make bravery, confidence, compassion, hope, grit, or anything else you want to feel a part of your regular resource is to practice it every day for about 34 days in a row.
This is the basic essence of a system I developed called “Perpetual Notion: 34 Days to Irresistible Change” that I teach for free. It is a core element of my much larger program called “Create! Don’t Wait”, a neuroscience-based system that leads to real action; the only genuine path to results. Whatever you are about to do in your life, resource yourself first. What emotional resource do you need to accomplish that particular task? Generate it. The formula for all 34,000 emotions are already within you and you have already experienced all of them within your life time. Don’t make this more complicated than it needs to be. Find a time you felt what you need to feel (even if you don’t know what to call it) and use your entire memory recall system to generate it within your mind. Repeat this many times and then step into your important task with the emotional resource you need to accomplish it. Let’s Make it Real.
